Roscoe Berry, Vietnam vet, Part-time bartender, and private investigator, is despondent over the leveling of his family farm on the outskirts of Austin when he is hired by a rich developer, Calvin Feldman, to find his missing, son, Darren. At this same time, a beloved college professor of his, Alan Stafford, is murdered.
As Roscoe grieves his two losses, he immerses himself in the search for the missing boy and uncovers a boys-for-sale ring operating throughout the southwest. The deeper he digs, the more sordid and dangerous things become. He discovers there are connections between the exploited children, his murdered professor, and the loss of his farm. This is a mystery and a meditation on the abuse of power in America and we are all its victims.
